Beaujolais Nouveau, the red wine made from Gamay grapes produced in Beaujolais region of France, has been getting a lot of fanfare in Japan. I was wondering why there was so much hype every time it became available here: people bathing in it, people celebrating its arrival at aquariums, etc.
Well, it has something to do with “Beaujolais Day”, or the day when the bottles are offered for sale. This day is the same for the whole world, the third Thursday in November, exactly at midnight. So what happens is due to time differences, Japan gets to enjoy the wine a few hours before Europe does!
